The department of Rheumatology at Kasargod Sunrise hospital treats and manages a broad range of conditions, effecting the muscles, joints, bones, ligaments and tendons or related to autoimmune disease. We specialise in treatments for Spondyloarthropathies – which affects the spine or pelvic joints, and can be difficult to diagnose. The symptom is mainly low back pain. Osteoarthritis a common form of arthritis, affecting the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones on the joints in the hands, knees, hips and spine. LE (Lupus Erythematosus) an inflammatory disease affecting different organs and other conditions that have characteristics of connective tissue diseases. Rheumatoid arthritis a disease that commonly affects the hands, knees or ankles. We have particular expertise who also focus on diseases like Systemic Vasculitis causing inflammation of the blood vessels leading to narrowing of the arteries and veins.

Treatment and Procedure

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by the breakdown of cartilage, leading to pain, swelling, and decreased joint mobility. It is the most common form of arthritis, affecting the knees, hips, hands, and spine. Symptoms include Joint pain and tenderness, Stiffness, especially in the morning, Loss of flexibility and Swelling. Treatment involves Lifestyle modifications ,Pain relief medications (acetaminophen, NSAIDs), Physical therapy, Corticosteroid injections and in some cases Surgery (joint replacement) may be required.

Lupus erythematosus (LE) and other connective tissue diseases (CTDs) are autoimmune disorders where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues, affecting skin, joints, and internal organs. Symptoms include Fatigue and fever, Joint pain, stiffness, and swelling, Skin rashes and Photosensitivity. Treatment involves Immunosuppressive medication, NSAIDs for pain relief, Lifestyle modifications and sun protection

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that affects the joints, leading to painful swelling, joint deformity, and loss of function. It is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the joint linings. Symptoms are Joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, Fatigue and fever. Treatment involves NSAIDs and corticosteroids for inflammation and pain relief, Physical therapy and occupational therapy and Lifestyle modifications.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition of widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and tenderness in localized areas. It is often accompanied by sleep disturbances, memory issues, fatigue and mood swings. Treatment involves taking Medications like (antidepressants, anticonvulsants, pain relievers), Physical therapy and exercise, Stress management and Sleep hygiene may also help.

Pregnancy in women with rheumatic diseases requires special considerations to manage both the mother’s health and the developing fetus. Conditions such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis can affect pregnancy and require careful monitoring and treatment plans. Some common Issues faced are Increased risk of preterm birth and low birth weight, pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes.

Systemic vasculitis refers to a group of disorders characterized by inflammation of the blood vessels, which can lead to organ and tissue damage. It causes giant cell arteritis, granulomatosis with polyangiitis, and microscopic polyangiitis. Symptoms include Fever and weight loss, fatigue, muscle and joint pain and skin rashes. Treatment involves Corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, anti suppressants and Long-term follow-up to prevent recurrence.
